Very nice writing. I loved the interviewed candidates and the stand taken by each interviewers. Indeed Mathematics needs it's own department without caring about application. But sometimes application of science calls for new mathematics and application of existing mathematics to new study of science. Eg. Probability and statistics is now being widely used in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

It is easy to name the Head of Mathematics Department.

Unfortunately this is reality ! Not only as described here in Maths Dept. but all the other departments as well ! Leading to downgrading the quality of education , leading to mediocracy ! All smokes & mirrors ! The rigidity of the so called super powers in the departments.

Looking forward to more such eye openeers .

Typical of Prof Narlikar’s stating the reality, whom I have known since he joined TIFR.

Excellent metaphor! It was fun to read. I was laughing hard.

It's indeed dramatic that Hardy is denied an interview but was on the list of candidates! I had expected Brouver (and Ramanujan) to show up, but can only imagine his plight (and the plight of HMD) -- it might have resulted in more absurd drama.

This might well qualify for the Absurdist Drama in a mathematical setting.
